We Changed Lives in Uganda by Providing Water to School Children and Nearby Villages

Drop in the Bucket is a non-profit organisation that builds water wells and sanitation systems at schools in sub-Saharan Africa.  In partnership with Drop in the Bucket, we provided a CompAir compressor to assist with borehole drilling, so that a water well could be provided at a school in Uganda.  We also assisted in the shipping of the product.

Before the well, the school and neighbouring villagers would get their water from a nearby swamp, but the water was not clean and the students would often miss school due to water related illnesses.

Before the borehole was drilled, the nearest source of clean water was a borehole 2 kilometers away. Due to the location, the community was drinking water from the swamp, as it was time-consuming and difficult to collect clean water from so far away.

The school where the well has been installed, is called Kyere Township Primary School with 474 boys and 581 girls for a total of 1027 students. There are 18 teachers at the school, most of which are male.  The head teacher is female.

The borehole serves the school, plus the village of Kyere Central and Omirio village. Kyere Central has 112 households for a population of 662 people.  Omirio has 89 households for a population of 503 people (in both of these villages, most of the population is female).  That makes a total of 2210 people using the well each day for water.

Drop in the Bucket head of development, John Travis, had this to say about the compressor: "There is no doubt that this compressor is a game changer for Drop in the Bucket and so far this year is already shaping up to be our biggest year to date. Thank you from everyone at Drop in the Bucket. This donation will change thousands of lives and make it possible for children to be able to go to school instead of spending hours every day fetching water" .

John also mentioned that before, they were able to drill through 1 meter of dense rock in 30 minutes, but using the new CompAir compressor, they were able to drill through 1 meter of dense rock in only 11 minutes.  This would allow them to do more projects per year at a reduced cost.
