Ingersoll Rand Celebrates World Humanitarian Day August 19

When you think of the year 2020, no doubt the global pandemic dominates the headlines around the world. Millions of people are affected—and millions more are working to support those affected by health crises and other disasters. World Humanitarian Day is held annually on August 19 to pay tribute to aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian service and to rally support for people affected by crises around the world.

In 2003, the United Nations General Assembly designated this day as World Humanitarian Day and the humanitarian community has organized global campaigns to commemorate this day each year. We can join others worldwide by advocating for the safety and security of humanitarian aid workers and for the survival, well-being and dignity of people affected by crises.

There are many ways to contribute to humanitarian causes, including materials or logistical assistance to provide nutrition, health, food security, water, sanitation and hygiene, and emergency response.  You can start small by creating change in your own community. Identify humanitarian issues in your community and help the homeless, feed the hungry, volunteer at a local shelter, and look for things that you could help to improve.

Learn more about the inspiring stories of these real-life heroes that demonstrate the powerful change humanitarian workers can bring to communities around the world. Being a humanitarian is about tolerance, empathy, cultural understanding and altruism. Anyone can be a humanitarian with this mindset of giving and improving the world around you and taking action.

Let’s all make a difference in our communities. As Martin Luther King said, “The time is always right to do what is right.”
